Since its inception, BHEL had been focusing on export orders too. In the early 1970s, it supplied similar steam boilers to Malaysia. According to industry experts, over the years, BHEL had built a strong base for exports through its ability to design and deliver appropriately, and at competitive costs... Increasing Threat from Rivals For a long time, in the Indian power sector, BHEL had been the sole equipment supplier and NTPC a major player in power production. But from the 1990s, many companies like Reliance Power, Adani Power, and Lanco entered and became dominant players in power production while the Larsen & Toubro-Mitsubushi Heavy Industries (L&T-MHI) joint venture, the Bharat Forge-Alstom tie-up, Siemens India, and ABB, accounted for around two-thirds of market share in equipment supply...
